How to Choose a Kitchen Sink?

  • 04.08.2025

The kitchen sink is the heart of the kitchen, used more intensively than any other appliance. The right choice ensures comfortable meal preparation and easy cleaning for years to come.

1. Materials and Their Characteristics

The material of the sink determines its resistance to stains, heat, and impacts.

Stainless Steel

A hygienic, heat-resistant, and timeless choice. For a quality sink, check the steel thickness—thicker steel (from 0.8–1 mm) is quieter and more durable.

Granite Composite (e.g., Blanco Silgranit)

Made of 80% natural stone, this material is extremely scratch-resistant and available in a wide range of colors. A granite sink dampens the sound of running water and feels pleasantly warm.

Ceramic Sink

The best choice for lovers of classic or farmhouse styles. The smooth, non-porous surface is completely stain- and acid-resistant and very easy to clean.

2. Installation Methods

The mounting method depends primarily on your kitchen countertop material.

Top-Mount (Overmount)

Suitable for all countertops, including laminate. The sink edge sits on top of the surface, making installation quick and easy.

Flush-Mount

The sink and countertop form a single surface without height differences. This is an aesthetically flawless solution that prevents dirt buildup under the edges.

Under-Mount

The sink is attached under the countertop (stone or composite). This leaves the work surface fully open and allows crumbs to be wiped directly into the sink.

3. Size and Number of Bowls

Consider your kitchen size, cooking habits, and whether you have a dishwasher. The sink size must be proportional to the cabinet width (usually 45 cm, 60 cm, or 80 cm).

Single Large Bowl

The best choice for small kitchens or if you often wash large pots and baking trays. A deep single bowl holds a lot while taking up minimal counter space.

1.5 Bowl Sink

Offers extra convenience—while dishes soak in the main bowl, you can rinse vegetables or pour out liquids in the small additional bowl.

Double Bowl Sink

Ideal for large kitchens and households where a lot of cooking happens. It allows for two different tasks at once without interrupting the workflow.

Expert Tip: Choose a sink at least 18–20 cm deep. This helps prevent water from splashing onto the countertop and makes washing large items more comfortable.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Will a black granite sink become faded or stained?

No, if you choose a quality manufacturer (e.g., Blanco or Franke). White spots are usually limescale deposits from water, which can be easily removed with special cleaners.

Which material is the most hygienic?

Stainless steel and ceramic are considered the most hygienic because their non-porous surfaces do not allow bacteria to multiply and are easy to disinfect.

Can an undermount sink be installed on a laminate surface?

It is not recommended, as the core of laminate is particle board, which swells when wet. Undermount installation is designed for waterproof materials like stone, quartz, or solid wood.
